Punjab to set up NRI police stations

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government is setting up six police stations for NRIs and a fast track court to deal with issues related to them.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal made the announcement on the opening day of the two-day Punjabi NRI conference being held in Chandigarh.

The six NRI police stations will be set up in Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Moga, Nawanshahr and Ludhiana districts. All of them will have web-enabled hotlines and each will have jurisdiction over the entire state.

The state government has also designated senior officers in the Punjab Police to look after NRI affairs exclusively.

Among other incentives announced by Badal for NRIs from Punjab is the setting up of a fast track court at Jalandhar to deal with their property and revenue cases.

Badal said that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had been approached in this regard.

The chief minister also announced the setting up of an empowered committee headed by the chief secretary to clear NRI projects quickly. Another committee, which will also have NRIs members, will look into the problems of NRIs and resolve them.

He said that all revenue records will be put up on a website so that NRIs can get details at the click of a mouse.

The chief minister directed the state police chief to review all the 1,300 cases in which NRIs have been declared proclaimed offenders. He said that these cases should be resolved within two months.

He also said that a website containing a complete directory of NRIs will be prepared soon.
